"Hippocampus; Algerian Journal of fisheries and aquaculture Research" is a biannual scientific journal produced and published by the National Centre for Research and Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CNRDPA). This journal is a new version of the centre's newsletter "Info CNRDPA". It is dedicated to the observations and experiences made by researchers in marine sciences and aquaculture. This new form reflects exactly the basic objectives that were at the origin of the birth of the research activity in marine science and aquaculture in Bou-Ismail. To this end, and as a tribute to the region that chose the marine animal "seahorse" as the symbol of Bou Ismail Bay, the journal adopted the name "Hippocampus".
The history of the journal Hippocampus merges with that of the CNRDPA, in fact, the centre was installed in the structures of the Bou-Ismail aquarium, with the same foundations, and the same missions of the CERP (Centre for Applied Research and Documentation Studies for Fishing and Aquaculture) and of the ISTPA, (Scientific and Technical Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture), which were the legitimate and natural heirs of the heritage of the Castiglione Aquaculture and Fishing Station. The latter, created in 1921, was for a long time a reference point for everything related to marine sciences in the Mediterranean. Its research work carried out on the Algerian coast was published in a periodical bulletin "The bulletin of the works of the Castiglione station" from 1926 to 1959. A bulletin that allowed the station at the time to have an important place in the world of marine sciences. To this day it remains a bibliographic reference in the aquatic sciences.
The journal Hippocampus is the continuation of this scientific adventure and is aimed at a specialist audience. The journal accepts research and review articles in the field of marine science in general and more particularly in the disciplines of fisheries, socio-economics of fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic ecosystems and biotechnology in relation to aquatic ecosystems. Hippocampus: adopts an editorial line and a communication policy that offer it an opportunity to position itself and to be representative in these disciplines, notably in Algeria, and also allow it to be present on the regional and international level. Hippocampus: Algerian Journal of Fisheries and Aquaculture Research offers immediate access to its content, its electronic version is available, consultable and downloadable free of charge.
